Bhasma Aarti
The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, in which the linga is worshipped with sacred ash, is the temple's most famous ritual. It is booked in advance through the temple's official system, and dress rules apply to those attending.
History
Ujjain is an ancient city and one of the sites of the Kumbh (Simhastha) Mela. Historical accounts describe the temple's destruction in the 13th century and its rebuilding in the 18th century under Maratha rule. In 2022 a large redevelopment, the Mahakal Lok corridor, opened around the temple.
