What is Rudrabhishek?

Rudrabhishek is the ritual bathing (abhishek) of the Shiva linga while priests chant the Sri Rudram, a hymn to Shiva as Rudra from the Krishna Yajurveda. Water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and other offerings are poured over the linga. At Kashi Vishwanath it is booked through the official temple portal.

Meaning

The word joins Rudra — an ancient name of Shiva — and abhishek, ritual bathing. The chanted hymn is the Sri Rudram (also called Rudradhyaya or Rudra Prashna), found in the Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajurveda. It has two parts: the Namakam, a litany of salutations ("namo…") to Rudra, and the Chamakam, a series of prayers ("cha me…") for well-being.

Significance

The process

The details vary by tradition and by the priest, but a Rudrabhishek generally includes:

  1. Sankalpa — a statement of intention naming the devotee, family and purpose.
  2. Invocation — prayers to Ganesha and invocation of Shiva.
  3. Abhishek with Rudram chanting — water and other substances are poured over the linga as the Namakam and Chamakam are recited, often repeated.
  4. Adornment — the linga is decorated with sandal paste, flowers and bel leaves.
  5. Aarti and prasad.

Duration

A Rudrabhishek is commonly described as taking one to two hours, depending on how many times the Rudram is recited and how many priests take part. Confirm the timing for the service you book.

When we checked the official booking list in September 2026 it offered:

  • Rudrabhishek (1 Shastri) — performed by one priest
  • Rudrabhishek (11 Shastri) — performed by eleven priests
  • Rudrabhishek (1 Shastri) — video conference — for devotees who cannot be present

What devotees should expect

  • Arrive early with the ID used for booking; phones stay in the locker.
  • The priest will ask for names and gotra for the sankalpa. If you don't know your gotra, it is common to say "Kashyap gotra".
  • Dress in clean, modest, preferably traditional clothes.
  • Follow the priest's instructions for offerings.
