Kashi Vishwanath Temple Rules: Dress Code, Phones and Entry

Rules at Kashi Vishwanath are set by the temple administration and the security authorities, and they are adjusted — often at short notice — for festivals and crowd conditions. The points below reflect arrangements widely reported and experienced by visitors; where we could not confirm a rule with an official source, we say so.

Phones, cameras and electronics

Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches and other electronic devices are generally not permitted inside the temple. Lockers are provided near the entry points (the official Sugam Darshan description mentions a free locker). Plan for being without your phone: agree a meeting point and time with your group beforehand.

Bags, leather and other items

Bags are deposited before entry. Leather items such as belts and wallets are commonly asked to be left outside. Tobacco, lighters, sharp objects and similar items are not allowed through security. See the full list in what not to carry.

Footwear

Footwear is removed and left at the designated stand before entering. The courtyard stone can be very hot in summer afternoons and cold on winter mornings.

Dress code

There is no dress code published on the official pages we checked for general darshan. Modest clothing is expected in any Hindu temple: cover shoulders and knees, and avoid clothing with offensive prints. Traditional clothing — kurta, dhoti, saree or salwar kameez — is always appropriate.

Security checks

Everyone passes through security screening. Expect frisking and bag checks at entry points and at times in the lanes nearby. Carry as little as possible to speed things up.

Inside the sanctum

• Keep moving as directed by staff; do not stop in the line.
• Make offerings where and how staff indicate.
• Photography and filming are not allowed.
• Keep your voice low; chanting is welcome, pushing is not.

Touching the linga (sparsh darshan)

At times, devotees have been allowed to touch the Jyotirlinga during certain hours. On busy days this is suspended and darshan is from a short distance. For example, All India Radio reported in July 2024 that sparsh darshan and daily passes would be cancelled on each Monday of Sawan. Follow the arrangement in force on your day.

Offerings

Flowers, bel leaves, water and milk are traditional offerings, available from shops around the temple. On crowded days offerings may be collected or poured through an arrangement outside the sanctum rather than directly onto the linga.
