When is the best time to visit Varanasi?
October to March is the most comfortable time, with pleasant days and the festival season of Dev Deepawali. December and January bring cold mornings and fog that can delay trains and flights. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon (July to September) floods the ghats. Two to three days is enough for a first visit.

Getting around
Walking is the only way through the old city's lanes. For longer distances use e-rickshaws, autos, app-based cabs and taxis; boats connect the ghats. Vehicles are restricted near the temple and ghats. See local transport.

Day trips
- Sarnath (about 10 km) — the Dhamek Stupa, Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and the museum with the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem.
- Ramnagar Fort — the 18th-century fort-palace of the Maharajas of Banaras across the river, with a museum. Ramnagar's month-long Ramlila (around Dussehra) is famous.
- Chunar Fort — a historic fort on the Ganga, a longer excursion.
